Rid Ants the Right Way

Most people do not want ants to get inside their home. By placing bait stations outside, you can prevent ants from coming inside. Bait stations are a safe and effective way to get rid of ants. If bait stations are new to you, here’s everything you need to know:

What are bait stations?

Bait stations are enclosed devices that contain a mixture of a pesticide with an ant attractant.

Bait stations are better than other ant control methods:

  • Most things that get into storm drains go untreated into our creeks, rivers, and ocean. In a recent survey, over 75% of respondents stated that polluted waterways affect them. Pesticides are a serious source of pollution and using bait stations is a safer alternative because they prevent pesticides flowing into our waterways.
  • Bait stations pose less of a risk to children, pets, and waterways by reducing possible contact with any pesticides. Since the pesticide is contained inside of bait stations, it is safer for families and our creeks, rivers, and ocean.
  • The results may not be immediate, but they can kill the entire colony, including the queen. Since the bait is brought and fed to the entire colony, bait stations can get the job done even when you don’t know exactly where they’re coming from. Other methods only kill the workers that come in contact with the pesticide. If the queen is not killed, the colony will re-emerge.
  • Some methods only repel ants causing them to search for other food sources. This means they won’t leave your space – they’ll just look for another way in.

Where to put bait stations:

For bait stations to be most effective, follow the ants’ trails and place them close to the mound in a safe location. If the mound can’t be found, place the bait station along the trail.

How to get the most out of your bait stations:

  • Follow the application instructions on the package.
  • Secure your bait stations to the ground so they do not get blown or swept away. Removable stakes or adhesive pads are typically included. Another technique is to place them under an upside-down flowerpot.
  • Once secured, check baited areas regularly for ants entering the station. A variety of active ingredients and attractants are used in bait stations. If the bait station you’re using isn’t working, another brand may work better.
  • Make sure to keep the bait station in place for 3-4 days after you see no more signs of feeding to confirm the colony has died off. Large ant colonies may require multiple bait stations if there is enough demand.
