Adopt A Channel

December 17, 2018

Did you know?

Orange County Public Works (OC Public Works) operates and maintains more than 380 miles of flood control channels that provide a vital service to our community. These channels were built to manage stormwater runoff and are a critical component of preventing flooding across our county. Unfortunately, the runoff that flows into these channels often collects trash and debris along the way, which then makes its way into our creeks, wetlands, and ultimately, the ocean!

What’s being done?

To help keep these channels clean and improve our water quality, OC Public Works established the ‘Adopt A Channel’ program. The program increases an awareness of and a commitment to keeping our waterways clean and healthy while in turn, providing community stewardship of these valuable resources. To date, 24.3 miles of channel have been adopted by community members. Last year, these Adopters hosted 81 cleanup events, resulting in the removal 3,223 pounds of trash and debris and abatement of 18,385 square feet of graffiti.

What can you do?

OC Watersheds Adopt a Channel
Adopters will be recognized by the display of their name or logo on a program sign at the Adoption Site.

Thirteen channels have already been adopted, but there are many more that need your help. Some of the tasks to be carried out by an Adopter include:

  • Collecting trash
  • Routinely inspecting the adoption site
  • Painting over graffiti
  • Identifying hazardous waste for pick up by OC Public Works

These tasks can either be completed by the Adopter, such as a business getting their staff together for a team building exercise, or the Adopter may choose to subcontract these tasks out to a third party. It’s a win for our waterways either way!
